Newsletter 1IntroductionJuly 2003As you know, the Government recently released a package of major reforms to the higher education sector, Our Universities: Backing Australia’s Future. The package includes a number of initiatives which will require major changes to the way in which universities and this Department currently operate. We are aware from the presentations which Dr Carol Nicoll and I recently made in major State capitals that many universities are already considering the implications for their academic programmes and administration. Directors within the Higher Education Group who have responsibility for individual initiatives have already received a large number of enquiries, seeking further details of the ways in which these initiatives are to operate, and we welcome these enquiries. In order to ensure that the information flow from DEST to universities on the reforms is consistent and rationalised, we propose to send Vice-Chancellors a regular email bulletin, which will be a conduit for provision of information on aspects of the package. The bulletin will bring together all communications to Vice-Chancellors as a group. We envisage that it will include a newsletter and attachments providing guidelines and other implementation material on individual initiatives under the package, information on proposed consultation processes and other general information. As you can see, this bulletin includes a range of material of this kind. I hope you find the newsletter useful and informative. We welcome any feedback and ideas you may have on the most effective ways in which we can provide information to you. If you would like other members of your staff to receive the newsletter
on a regular basis, please email details to Shane Samuelson on
